AVID Mission Statement

The mission of AVID is to ensure that all students, and most especially the least served students in the academic middle, complete a college preparatory path. AVID students will

·        succeed in rigorous curriculum,

·        complete a college preparatory path,

·        enter mainstream activities of the school,

·        increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, and

·        become educated, responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society.

 

The OHS AVID program is a four-year regularly scheduled elective college preparatory class for students with academic potential.

Course Description: The purpose of this course is to provide grade 11 students opportunities for using texts of high complexity to integrate language arts study in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language for college and career preparation and readiness. Course content will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • active reading of varied texts for what they say explicitly, as well as the logical inferences that can be drawn
  • analysis of literature and informational texts from varied literary periods
  • writing for varied purposes
  • effective listening, speaking, and viewing strategies with emphasis on the use of evidence to support or refute a claim in multimedia presentations, class discussions, and extended text discussions
  • collaboration amongst peers
